FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -The North Texas tennis team won 4-0 against the University of Southern Illinois, picking up its first win of the season this afternoon in Fayetteville, Ark.
“I am very happy for our ladies today, they fought their hearts out today,” said head coach Sujay Lama. “We needed this victory to get our confidence and mojo back.”
In doubles play, the Mean Green duo of Alexis Thoma and Kamilla Galieva defeated Southern Illioios No. 2 team 7-5, while Dane Joubert and Anastasiya Shestakova won at the No.3 spot (6-4).
“Our chemistry and energy in doubles got us going early on and we took that into our singles play,” Lama said.
In singles play, Ana Sofia Cordero defeated Gisela Baza, 6-4, 6-3 to finish first and picked up her second singles win of the season. Freshman Alexis Thoma won 4-6, 6-1, 10-6 against Ari Baza, and Kamilla Galieva’s 6-2, 6-3 victory over Southern Illinois retired the remaining singles games.
“Having one of two juniors back was a huge boost for the team,” Lama said. “Franzi played an outstanding doubles match and her leadership on the court made a huge difference.”
The North Texas tennis team will take on the Houston Cougars Saturday, Feb. 8 at 11 a.m.
