LAS COLINAS, Texas (1/31/10) -
Forced inside due to inclement weather, North Texas Tennis had no trouble adjusting as the Mean Green powered through UT- San Antonio, 7-0, at Las Colinas Country Club on Sunday afternoon.
North Texas (2-1) jumped out to an early lead, sweeping doubles play while only allowing the Road Runners (0-1) to win nine games.
Sophomore's Irina Paraschiv and Paula Dinuta along with Junior Madura Ranganathan clinched the match by winning their singles matches.
Playing in the No. 1 spot, Paraschiv rode the momentum that she built up in her doubles victory, and took out UTSA's Micaela Silva 6-0, 6-2.
"I felt really good out there on the court today," said Paraschiv. "We came out as a team and wanted to build confidence and play well against a good UTSA team. I think that we did just that."
Dinuta and Ranganathan also dominated play in their matches en route to 6-0, 6-1 victories.
The match of the day, however, featured the No. 6 slot singles players. Junior Narine Kazarova, who missed the Florida trip due to injury, faced off with the Road Runners' Katie Ottenbreit.
Kazarova, playing in her first singles match of the spring, fell behind early and had to battle back. After dropping the first set 2-6, Kazarova dug in and won the second set 6-4. She then took the tiebreaking third set 10-7.
The Mean Green will now hit the road for the first of two matches against Big 12 Conference opponents this week when they head to Norman, Okla., to face the University of Oklahoma Sooners Wednesday at 3 p.m.
"We were glad to get this win today," said Ranganathan. "Now we have to get ready to face a talented Oklahoma team on Wednesday, before coming home to face Texas Tech. This has the chance to be a huge week if we can win those two matches."
After the OU match, North Texas will return home to face No. 74 Texas Tech on Saturday at 12 p.m. at the Waranch Tennis Complex. Admission is free of charge and results will be available on MeanGreenSports.com.
