No. 11 Aggies Sweep Mean Green in ITA Kick-Off
Bardabush Nearly Defeats No. 29 Singles Player Gavrilovska
COLLEGE STATION — In the opening round of the ITA Kick-Off, No. 11 Texas A&M shut out the North Texas tennis team by a score of 4-0. After the Mean Green lost the doubles point, the Aggies took the next three singles results and then the last three singles matches went unfinished.
If not for it being one of the unfinished matches, Kseniya Bardabush could have been on the verge of defeating the No. 29 singles player in the nation, Saska Gavrilovska. Bardabush was winning 7-5, 4-0 before being called off the court.
"We played at a high level for most of the match, and I liked he way we battled when things didn't go our way," head coach Sujay Lama evaluated. "Kseniya played an outstanding match and it was a pity she wasn't able to complete the match against a very highly ranked opponent."
In addition, the doubles team of Ana Sofia Cordero and Agustina Valenzuela were tied 4-4 with the Texas A&M duo of Stefania Hristov and Eva Paalma, but that match was also unfinished.
The No. 70 Mean Green will now move on to play No. 35 Houston, who lost by a score of 4-0 to No. 41 TCU. Some singles players North Texas will have to look out for on the Cougars will be No. 21 sophomore Despoina Vogasari and No. 52 senior Elena Kordolaimi.
"We have tough match tomorrow against a very talented Houston team," Lama said. "We need to get off to a good start in doubles and get our No. 1 doubles team to lead us with their play and experience. The two matches we have played so far have forced us to raise our game. I believe they have prepared us to have a solid performance tomorrow."
The consolation game of the ITA Kick-Off between the Mean Green and the Cougars will take place at 3 p.m. at the Mitchell Tennis Center.
