Tennis Falls to No. 24 Oklahoma in First Spring Action
Doubles Team of Shestakova and Thoma Grabs Lone Victory
NORMAN, Okla. -- The first match of the spring season did not go as hoped for the North Texas tennis team, as the visiting Mean Green lost 7-0 to the host Sooners. No. 24 Oklahoma began the day by winning the doubles point, then proceeded to sweep all six singles matches at the Wadley Indoor Pavilion. Even though it was a shutout loss, North Texas played right down to the wire in doubles and kept most of the singles matches close.
"Overall I'm pleased with with the way we played and competed," head coach Sujay Lama said. "We gave ourselves an opportunity to win the doubles point and had chances in several singles matches."
The lone Mean Green win of the day came from doubles team Anastasiya Shestakova and Alexis Thoma, who defeated Lily Miyazaki and Simian Sethi by a score of 6-3. The other two North Texas doubles pairs lost their matches, however, so the daily doubles point went to the Sooners. Kseniya Bardabush and Franziska Sprinkmeyer lost by a score of 6-2, while Ana Sofia Cordero and Agustina Valenzuela were edged in a tiebreaker by a score of 7-6 (2).
In singles play, Bardabush won her first set against Miyazaki, but then dropped the final two for a 4-6, 6-0 6-4 loss. Similarly, Valenzuela won her first set over Zita Engbroks, but then fell in the last two for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 loss. The other four Mean Green players were swept in singles play, including Kamilla Galieva, who replaced Cordero in the singles lineup.
"The key is to learn from today and get back to work," Lama concluded.
Next up for the Mean Green will be a trip to College Station for the ITA Kick-Off. On January 24, North Texas will face No. 11 Texas A&M at 12 p.m. and No. 35 Houston will face No. 41 TCU at 3 p.m. The following day, the winner will play the winner and the loser will play the loser.
