ORLANDO, Fla. — The North Texas tennis team wrapped up action from UCF’s Quad Tournament on Monday, finishing the day with four wins - two in singles and two in doubles - to up its total to eight after three days of play. Overall, the Mean Green finish the weekend with five wins in singles action and three victories in doubles contests.
“We got a ton of work in over these last three days,” head coach Sujay Lama said. “We needed the reps to get rid of our rust but also to get back into a competitive groove. Slowly but surely we improved and finished off strong.”
In the day’s singles slate versus FIU, North Texas saw a trio of competitive matches go to three sets, including a come-from-behind 4-6, 7-6(5), 7-5 win for junior Alexis Thoma at the No. 2 spot over Golden Panther senior Carlotta Orlando. Freshman Minying Liang also picked up a singles victory - the first of her career - in a 6-3, 6-3 decision over senior Kaitlin Brozovich.
“Today was a day that we needed to prove to ourselves that we can finish strong with fight and grit,” Thoma said. “I think we succeeded with that, but there is room for improvement which is good news as well. I am proud of my teammates and I think we are going to do great things this season.”
In doubles play, the freshman duo of Maria Kononova and Tamuna Kutubidze took its second win in as many days, knocking off UCF seniors Sofia Baptista and Caroline Eberhart by a score of 6-2. Adding a doubles victory was the team of freshman Laura Arciniegas and senior Agustina Valenzuela, who took down freshman Diana Dehterevich and senior Clare Mendell of UCF, 6-1.
The Mean Green now prepares for the start of its spring dual schedule, a season that starts in mere days when North Texas hosts Central Arkansas at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 23, from the Waranch Tennis Complex.
