ORLANDO, Fla. — The North Texas tennis team wrapped up its second day at the UCF Quad Tournament on Sunday, coming away with two wins for the second day in a row.
The Mean Green’s doubles performance was the spotlight for head coach Sujay Lama’s squad, as the freshman duo of Tamuna Kutubidze and Maria Kononova picked up the team’s first doubles win of the spring in a 6-4 victory over FIU freshman Maryna Voksler and junior Nina Nagode.
On the singles side of things, senior Agustina Valenzuela picked up the lone Mean Green singles win of the day, coming against Rice senior Solomiva Zinko.
“My match today was challenging,” Valenzuela said. “[Zinko] had some really good shots and she was very consistent but I really wanted to win. Even though I was tired I never stopped believing that I could win and I fought for every ball.”
Valenzuela’s win didn’t come easy. The senior from Santiago, Chile, went three rounds with her Conference USA challenger. Through two sets, the match was all knotted up, but Valenzuela finished things off with a 6-2 decision in the final set, bringing the final match score to 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
Freshman Laura Arciniegas, coming off a singles win on Saturday, also battled for three frames before falling to Rice sophomore Savannah Durkin in a hard-fought third set; 5-7, 6-1, 7-5. Junior Alexis Thoma was the only other Mean Green player to play three sets in singles action, coming in a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 loss to Rice freshman Fernanda Astete.
The Mean Green will close out play from the Sunshine State on Monday, when the team is set to play UCF in doubles before taking on FIU in singles action. That slate of matches is set to begin at 10 a.m.
