Thoma Leads Mean Green In Final Matches Before Dual Match Season Begins
Senior Wins Singles Match
DALLAS -- North Texas women's tennis completed the Metroplex Mania at SMU on Monday. It was its first competition in nearly two months and the last before the spring dual match season begins on Saturday at No. 5 Oklahoma State.
The Mean Green ended SMU's three-day hidden dual format invite with eight singles wins. Late Monday afternoon, senior Alexis Thoma won that eighth match (6-4, 1-6, 7-5) at the No. 2 spot over BYU's Natella Nabieva.
"This tournament allowed us to take some rust off from not competing since November, see where we all need to improve and teach everyone that there is always a way to win," Thoma said. "Today our main focus was finishing."
Also winning her match on Monday for North Texas was Alexandra Heczey. The Mean Green freshman defeated BYU's Alana Bourgeois (6-2, 6-4) at No. 6. All three North Texas freshmen won at least one singles match at the Metroplex Mania.
Thoma's win is her sixth this year. It was her first ever match against the Cougars.
North Texas received strong performances this weekend from numerous Mean Green tennis players. Freshman Haruka Sasaki won her singles match on Saturday and Sunday. She and Thoma also won their doubles match on Saturday over Conference USA foe Rice.
Also having a big weekend was sophomore Maria Kononova who won her singles match on Sunday over a 2016 First-Team All-C-USA selectee.
Thoma, the lone senior on this North Texas team, went into Monday's matches making sure the team stayed focused on finishing strong, for the Mean Green have a competitive schedule this season that will challenge their toughness.
"It's all about how you finish on the last day," Thoma said. "That's when everyone is their most tired. But champions are made on the last day. The ones that have the fight to push through pain and adversity come out on top."
North Texas begins its spring dual match season on Saturday Jan. 21 at 11:00 a.m. at No. 5 Oklahoma State. The Cowboys were the NCAA runner-ups a season ago.
