ORLANDO, Fla. -- The North Texas tennis team opened its spring season from the UCF Quad Tournament in what was a competitive first day against quality opponents. By the evening, two Mean Green players - senior Anastasiya Shestakova and freshman Laura Arcinieagas - came away with individual wins.
In singles play, North Texas matched up with the hosting Knights for the hidden dual format. Shestakova's win at the No. 1 spot was the highlight for the Mean Green's day, coming as a three-set decision over senior Sofia Baptista from UCF; 5-7, 6-0, 6-3. In similar fashion, Arciniegas dropped her first set against freshman Diana Dehterevich before taking the 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 win.
"It was a tough, long match and I truly enjoyed my performance on the court today," Shestakova said of her performance. "Despite the hot, humid weather, the team showed a great effort and tremendous support for each other. We have two more matches this weekend and I expect some good things to happen."
Freshman Maria Kononova was the only other Mean Green player to go three sets on Saturday, ultimately falling to junior Cortney Cesarini; 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.
In the afternoon, North Texas faced off with a No. 31 Rice team that took all three doubles wins. The freshman duo of Tamuna Kutubidze and Kononova put up the biggest fight, falling 6-4 versus an Owls duo of sophomore Lindsey Hodge and junior Alison Ho.
Sunday's lineup of events, which has been rescheduled for an 11 a.m. start due to weather concerns, will see the Mean Green challenging FIU in doubles before taking on Rice in singles.
