Mean Green Finish Day Two Of Metroplex Mania With Six Wins

Jan. 13, 2018

DALLAS — For the second straight day the Mean Green tennis team won six matches at the Metroplex Mania held at SMU.

Headlining North Texas’ strong day was freshman Sille Tranberg who defeated the Mustangs’ Sarai Monarrez Yesaki in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0.

Tranberg is off to a 2-0 start to the 2018 season.

“I felt I played my own game today and played more aggressive than yesterday,” Tranberg said. “In general, the whole team did a really good job today. “

Like on Friday on the first day of the Metroplex Mania, UNT picked up five singles wins against its opponent. Saturday, Tranberg, freshman Nidhi Surapaneni and sophomores Haruka Sasaki, Alexandra Heczey and Ivana Babic defeated SMU competitors, all in straight sets.

For Surapaneni and Sasaki, Saturday’s success comes on the heels of Friday when the freshman and sophomore also won their singles matches in straight sets over Georgia State opponents.

Saturday, Surapaneni defeated Ana Perez-Lopez of SMU, 6-3, 7-5, while Sasaki beat Nicole Petchey, 6-4, 7-5.

As for Heczey and Babic, Saturday was a bounce-back performance for the two sophomores. Heczey lost Friday in straight sets while Babic narrowly dropped her singles match on Friday.

Babic returned to SMU’s Turpin Stadium and Brookshire Family Pavilion locked in and won her singles match smoothly, 6-2, 6-3.

Heczey also only needed two sets to beat her Mustang opponent and dominated in the last set as she won 7-6, 6-1 over Charline Anselmo.

In doubles, North Texas played BYU and picked up its one victory on court one. Tamuna Kutubidze and Alexandra Heczey defeated Jones/Cusick, 6-3.

“I’m really excited for this season,” Tranberg said. It feels like we already have a good start and preparation and are in good shape. We are ready for next week.”

UNT will conclude the Metroplex Mania on Sunday before they travel to the University of South Florida on Jan. 19 for the first dual match of the year.

For Mean Green fans looking to attend Sunday’s competition, SMU’s Turpin Stadium and Brookshire Family Pavilion is located at 5669 N Central Expy, Southern Methodist University, Dallas, TX 75205.
