ARKADELPHIA, Ark. (11/23/02) - The North Texas women's swimming and diving team excelled at the Arkansas Invitational, picking up victories over Ouachita Baptist, Centenary and Arkansas-Little Rock.
The Mean Green won four events and had 12 top-three finishes to knock off three of its four opponents at the meet. North Texas defeated Centenary 108-3, Arkansas-Little Rock 95-16 and Ouachita Baptist 59-54. It's only setback came against St. Louis, narrowly falling 61-52 against the Billikens.
"This was a good, solid meet," said North Texas head coach Mona Nyheim-Canales. "We won three of our four dual meets and were very close with St. Louis. Everyone on the team gave solid performances, but you can tell they are getting tired towards the end of the semester. I am looking forward to them getting some rest for the Arkansas-Little Rock Invitational in two weeks."
North Texas captured event titles in the 200-Yard Medley Relay, 1000-Yard Freestyle, 200-Yard Freestyle and 50-Yard Freestyle events. Charity Dillow won the 1000 Free with a season-best time of 10:57.00, Bethany Pipes captured the 200 Free title with a time of 1:59.30 and Charlene McClain swam a 25.60 in the 50 Free to claim the top spot in the event.
The 200-Yard Medley Relay team that won the event posted a season-best time of 1:54.03. Along with the 200 Medley Relay team and Dillow in the 1000 Free, North Texas had a relay team, swimmer or diver post season-best times or scores in the 200-Yard Freestyle Relay, 200-Yard Individual Medley and One-Meter Diving events.
Christina Bernal set the team's best time in the 200 Individual Medley with a 2:20.89. Whitaker scored a season-best 202.45 in the One-Meter Diving event. The 200 Freestyle Relay team swam a 1:45.50 to top the Mean Green's previous season-best time in the event.
North Texas will close out the fall portion of its schedule Dec. 6-7 at the Arkansas-Little Rock Christmas Invitational.
