North Texas Swimmers And Divers Return To Action This Weekend
Swimmers Head To UH Invitational, Divers To Compete In UT Diving Invitational
DENTON -- After nearly three weeks off since last competing in a pair of dual meets in Houston, the North Texas swimming and diving team returns to action this weekend. The swimmers will be competing in the Phill Hansel Invitational, hosted by the University of Houston, while the divers will head to the University of Texas Diving Invitational.
The swimmers are set for the three-day meet starting on Thursday and concluding on Saturday. The preliminary sessions each day begin at 10 a.m., followed by the finals each day at 6 p.m. The invitational will feature 10 teams, including North Texas, and 18 events, with 13 individual races and five relays.
North Texas, ranked No. 36 in College Swimming's mid-major team rankings, will take on three fellow ranked teams in the mid-major team rankings in Rice (No. 12), Tulane (No. 19) and Houston (No. 35), as well as UC Davis, Colorado State, Idaho, New Mexico State, Northern Colorado and Oregon State.
This is the third straight season where North Texas has participated in the Phill Hansel Invitational, with the Mean Green placing sixth in 2013 and third place in 2014. There's also familiarity with in-state rivals Houston and Rice, as this weekend marks the third of four meets this season between North Texas and Houston and the second of four meets between North Texas and Rice.
Entering the weekend, sophomores Claudia Kitching and Sarah Vaisse boast Conference USA's two fastest times in the 200 breaststroke and 100 breaststroke, respectively. Other top performers include sophomore freshman Natalia Kwiatkowska, senior Bianca Bocsa and sophomore Sydney Buckley, who each won individual events and posted season-best times in the dual-meet win over Houston on Oct. 31.
The divers, under first-year diving coach Mark Murdock, head to the University of Texas Diving Invitational, which also starts on Thursday and concludes on Saturday. They will compete in the 3-meter competition on Thursday, the 1-meter competition on Friday, and for the first time this season, they will compete in the platform competition on Saturday.
North Texas will take the boards against divers from host Texas, as well as Arizona State, California, Colorado State, Houston, Miami (Florida), TCU, Trinity (Texas) and Wisconsin.
For the Mean Green, senior Jasmine Abercrombie earned Conference USA Diver of the Week earlier this season, while junior Samantha Scheck enters the weekend as the league's sixth-best performer on both the 1-meter (233.03) and 3-meter (246.75).
Live results will be available from both meets, through UHCougars.com and DiveMeets, respectively. In addition, the Longhorn Network will air the finals of the 3-meter and 1-meter competitions on Thursday and Friday night.
