Swimming and Diving Head South For Weekend Competitions
Diving To Competete In Austin, Swimming In Houston
DENTON – After nearly three weeks since its last competition, the North Texas swimming and diving team will return to action this weekend. The diving team will be in Austin for the UT Diving Invitational and the swimmers will be in Houston for the Phill Hansel Invitation hosted by the University of Houston.
The diving team is set for a three-day meet at UT Austin beginning on Thursday and concluding on Saturday.
North Texas’ diving team will compete in the one-and-three meter events as well as the platform for the
first time this season. Thursday will have 11 a.m. preliminaries followed by a 4 p.m. final, Friday is scheduled to begin at 12:45 p.m. followed by a 6:30 p.m. final and the platform event will begin at 12:45 p.m.
Senior Samantha Scheck excels in the platform event, owning the seventh spot in the North Texas record book with a score of 184.85. Averie Ruiz will also see her first competition since winning Conference USA’s Diver of the Week honors on Nov. 1.
The swim team is slated for a three-day meet starting on Friday and concluding on Sunday. Preliminary rounds will begin at 10 a.m. each day, followed by a finals round at 6 p.m. Sunday’s final round will begin at 5 p.m.
North Texas will be one of 10 teams in the invitational, competing against athletes from Houston, Idaho, Rice, New Mexico State, Tulane, Colorado, University of New Mexico, Vanderbilt and the University of California – Davis.
The Mean Green placed seventh in the invite a year ago.
Juniors Sarah Vaisse and Isabelle Morris are off to strong starts for the Mean Green. Vaisse has been a force in breaststroke events and as a member of relay teams, securing victories in the Little Rock Invitational and in a dual meet against Rice in the breaststroke event, and has been a part of five relay victories.
As for Morris, she has five individual victories on the year, claiming the top spot twice in both the 50-and-200 freestyle and once in the 100 freestyle.
