Ruiz Claims Diver Of The Week Honors For The First Time

Nov. 1, 2016

DENTON – North Texas diver Averie Ruiz was named Conference USA’s Diver of the Week, announced Tuesday by the Conference office.

This is the first nomination for last year’s C-USA Freshman Diver of the Year.

“Averie came into the year with great determination and focus,” North Texas diving coach Mark Murdock said. “She is beginning to trust herself through competitions, which is a step in the right direction, but she also understands there is still a long road ahead for where she wants to be.”

Ruiz secured first-place finishes in the one-and three-meter board events last Friday in a dual meet against C-USA opponent Rice. Her score 232.88 on the one-meter board was a new season high for the sophomore.

On Saturday versus Houston, Ruiz claimed fourth place on the one-meter board with a score of 225.23, and fifth place on the three-meter board at 211.65.

Ruiz and the North Texas diving team will return to competition on Nov. 17 at the Texas Diving Invitational in Austin.
