UNT Swimmers Come Up Short In Two Meets Against New Mexico State

Las Cruces, NM (10/27/00) - The UNT women’s swimming team opened the fall portion of its 2000-01 season this past weekend, dropping two head-to-head meets against Sun Belt Conference foe New Mexico State. The Lady Eagles saw NMSU come away with a 145-79 victory on Friday and a 140-85 win on Saturday.

UNT immediately fell behind in Friday’s meet as NMSU took a 12-4 lead after the first event and never relinquished it. UNT turned the tables on the Aggies to begin Saturday’s meet, jumping out to a17-16 lead after the first two events. However, NMSU came back to recapture the lead after the third event, 31-21, and continued to expand its margin over the Lady Eagles for the remainder of the day.

UNT had several strong performances from the weekend, capturing four titles in an individual event and one relay championship. The Lady Eagles finished one-and-two in two events for the entire weekend.

The team of Laruen Hill, Liz Jennings, Tiffani Harkrider and Maggi Chujo captured the 200 Freestyle championship on Saturday with a time of 1:42.41. Lisa Walfied won the 1,000 Freestyle (11:03.16) and Maggi Chujo took first in the 100 Freestyle (55.87) on Friday. The second day saw Tiffani Harkrider win the 200 Freestyle (2:00.56) and Christina Bernal win the 100 Breaststroke (1:13.16).

UNT will face Houston head-to-head in its next meet, Nov. 2.
