LAS CRUCES, NM (10/26/02)- The North Texas women’s swimming and diving team set new season-best times and scores in 10 events over the weekend while competing against New Mexico State, Denver and Air Force at the Sun Belt Fall Classic.
The Mean Green had season-best performances in three of five relay events at the meet, including the 400-Yard Freestyle Relay (3:45.83), 200-Yard Medley Relay (1:54.19) and the 200-Yard Freestyle Relay (1:42.88).
Individually, sophomore Bethany Pipes led the North Texas attack with one first-place finish, one third-place finish and two season-best times. Pipes won the 200-Yard Backstroke with a time of 2:11.47 and now has two first-place and four top-three finishes in the event for the entire season.
However, Pipes wasn’t the only North Texas swimmer to shine at the meet. Charity Dillow finished fifth of 16 swimmers in the 200-Yard Freestyle event on Friday with a time of 2:02.29 and posted the team’s season-best times in the 500-Yard Freestyle (5:25.63) and 400-Yard Individual Medley (4:50.28) events. Charlene McClain captured sixth place in the 50-Yard Freestyle event that featured 19 swimmers with a time of 25.65 on Friday and swam a 25.57 in the same event on Saturday to finish fourth among 18 places. Christina Bernal swam a 1:10.62 in the 100-Yard Breaststroke, the team’s fastest time this year and less than a second off the school-record time of 1:10.11. Tiffany Harkrider swam the team’s fastest time of 2002-03 in the 100-Yard Freestyle (56.18) to claim the seventh of 18 spots in the event.
On the diving board, Melissa Whitaker scored a season-best 287.35 in the Three-Meter event of Friday.
Air Force took the meet title, going undefeated with a 3-0 record for the weekend. Although the Mean Green performed well at times, it was unable to pick up a victory at the meet.
North Texas will be back in action Saturday, Nov. 2, at Texas A&M. The head-to-head meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
