Off the Board With Averie Ruiz

Oct. 24, 2016

DENTON - Last season, Averie Ruiz was named Conference USA's Freshman Diver of the Year. This season, Ruiz hopes to take the next step to build upon her success from a year ago. She also credits her gymnastics background for leading her into diving.

Name: Averie Ruiz
Class: 2019
Event: Diving
Hometown: Lubbock, Texas

Q: How does Denton differ from your hometown?

A: Denton differs from Lubbock because of its location near Dallas, a major city. The heat is about the same; however Denton tends to stay hot and humid throughout the night while Lubbock cools off.

Q: Who or what got you into the sport?

A: I started off with gymnastics and there weren’t any competitive teams for gymnastics for high schools in my school district. So, in order to keep a similar idea of using leg strength and flipping, I followed behind my older brother and older sister that chose the path of diving.

Q: What is your favorite event to compete?

A: They are all equally challenging yet rewarding. But, since it is most new to my diving career, tower.

Q: What event you hope to never compete in?

A: Coach Murdock definitely doesn’t allow not competing any of these events to be an option. Collegiate level is meant to show you how much you can do, so there’s nothing I hope to never compete.

Q: What are you looking forward to most about the upcoming season?

A: It can only go up from last season.

Q: What is your favorite sport to watch during the Olympics?

A: Gymnastics, track and field, or diving.

Q: Who is your team family?

A: My family consists of Abbie, Allison, and Brittany. I forgot our name, I think it’s eagle something. Abbie forgot as well…

Q: Do you have a hidden (or not so hidden) talent?

A: I can tumble, pretty good at busting, I can sing a little but like everyone can, that’s all I got.. Is sarcasm a talent? I can do that pretty well.

Q: If you could trade places with one person, who would it be and why?

A: I’d say I would be Beyoncé but if I did that then I couldn’t admire her so I’d trade with Simone Biles because that girl is my age and totally dominating at what she loves to do. She’s humble, motivated, and so supportive of her teammates. She’s crazy strong and people don’t always think she can generate that much power because she’s only 4’8. Basically, she like defeats doubts and blows everyone’s mind when she does it.
