DENTON, Texas (10/23/09)
- North Texas Swimming & Diving heads to Denver, Colo., looking to expand upon the best start in school history with a double dual against Denver and Utah Saturday afternoon.
Denver (0-0), who has been in the pool once competitively since they captured the runner-up spot at the Sun Belt Conference Championship last season, placed second at the Denver Relays earlier this year.
"This Saturday's meet will be a great opportunity to see where we are against the team that finished just ahead of us in the conference last year," head coach Joe Dykstra said. "Dual meets and championship meets are two very different things, but this still represents a chance to race against a team we are trying to leap over in the conference standings. This meet also presents the unique challenge of swimming at elevation, which very few of our girls have ever done before. We'll see how mentally tough we can be and how much fight we have in us."
The Mean Green (2-0) defeated New Orleans in its dual last Saturday 177-109 and is riding the momentum of having swept the Sun Belt Swimmer and Diver of the week awards.
Hiliary Riedmann, who won Sun Belt Swimmer of the Week, captured first place in all four events that she competed in. Delia Covo was the conference's Diver of the Week, taking first place on both boards for the second week in a row, and missing her career best on the one meter board of 229.87 by less than three points.
Utah (0-0) comes into Saturday with only half of its team having been in a meet this season. The Ute freshman and sophomores faced off against BYU earlier this month, but both schools treated the meet as an exhibition and did not keep team scores.
The double dual is set to begin at noon.
