NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (10/24/08) - The North Texas swimming & diving team won going away, 171-116, against Sun Belt foe New Orleans on Friday. This marked the first dual meet win of the season for the Mean Green. The team had many great performances featuring two freshmen, Rosa Gentile and Brandi Townsend, who combined to win seven events.
Mean Green swimming head coach Joe Dykstra talked about the squad's victory.
"I thought we performed well, winning so many close races," said Dykstra. "We spent time preparing for this meet and really got the job done."
Rosa Gentile teamed with Danae Welch, Taryne Cantillo, and Alicia Hale to win the 400 Medley Relay (4:01.12). She was also on the winning 200 Freestyle Relay team with Alicia Hale, Seabre Pope, and Nicole Leslie (1:38.40). Gentile took first in two individual events as well. She won the 100 Backstroke (59.18) and the 100 Butterfly (58.88).
Brandi Townsend won three individual events. She captured first in the 100 Breaststroke (1:09.78), the 200 Breaststroke (2:28.76), and the 200 Individual Medley (2:11.29).
Other winners in the swimming events included Emily Floyd (1650 Freestyle), Alicia Hale (200 Freestyle), Nicole Leslie (50 Freestyle), Rosita Bado (200 Backstroke), and Erika Roach (500 Freestyle).
North Texas diving won both of their events. In the one meter, Delia Covo won with her highest score of the season (224.63). In the three meter, Lauren Hudson took first with a score of 209.03.
The Mean Green gets a couple weeks off before returning to action at the Mean Green Duals in Denton on Saturday, November 8. This meet will have North Texas, Arkansas, SMU, New Mexico State, and Colorado State competing.
