Swimming And Diving Heads To Houston For Pair Of Dual Meets
North Texas Faces Rice, Houston on Friday and Saturday
DENTON - Coming off a season-opening road win over Little Rock, the North Texas swimming and diving team hits the road again for a pair of dual meets in Houston. The Mean Green will take on Conference USA foe Rice on Friday, followed by a dual meet against Houston at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Both opponents have been historically challenging for North Texas, which is 3-13 against Rice and 5-17 against Houston in dual meets. Saturday will be the second time the Mean Green gets in the pool with the Cougars after taking second to Houston at the North Texas Relays in September.
"Hosting them at our relay meet gave us a little introduction of what to expect," Mean Green head coach Brittany Roth said. "They've been on the rise. At our team meeting this week, we talked about how this weekend is going to be a mental and physical battle."
North Texas has lost four of its last five dual meets against the Owls and is coming off a 17-point defeat in last year's event in Denton.
"[Rice] is always a big meet for us," Roth said. "Between the in-state rivalry and them being in our conference really creates an air of importance."
The Mean Green opened the 2017-18 campaign with a 183-106 victory over Little Rock, highlighted by four combined individual and relay victories for junior Brittany Thurstin. Senior Claudia Kitching posted three wins on the day, and freshman Leigh Faires McGee built on her preseason success with her first collegiate win in the 200-yard freestyle.
On the boards, freshman diver Meghan Miller impressed in the three-meter dive with a score of 231.00 to take first place.
With their first collegiate meet in the books, the program's three freshman will be faced with a new challenge this week with meets on back-to-back days.
"It's something you have to get used to and something different than what they've ever done before," Roth said. "It'll be exciting to see what they can do with that."
