Mean Green Host North Texas Relays Friday
Swimming & Diving Continues Preseason Action
DENTON - The North Texas swimming & diving team continues preseason action when it hosts the annual North Texas Relays at the Westside Aquatic Center in Lewisville at 4 p.m. Friday. The field includes Houston, Little Rock, Oklahoma Baptist, Oklahoma Christian and SMU.
The event will feature the women's teams from North Texas, Houston and Little Rock, and the men's and women's squads for OBU, OCU and SMU, competing in 10 relays and the one- and three-meter dives.
"I really like this meet, because this week they're inching closer to the events that they'll be doing in dual-meet and championship-meet situations," North Texas head coach Brittany Roth said.
The Mean Green are coming off a successful performance at their annual pentathlon last Friday, securing the top spot in four of the five events and posting six of the top eight total times. Senior Sarah Vaisse led the way with a total time of 4:59.57, the only total time under five minutes, and posted the top time in the 100-yard individual medley (59.33).
"I told the girls the following day, 'We need to be excited about the things we've accomplished, but it's time to move forward,'" Roth said. "We have to take what we did at the pentathlon and learn from it."
Sophomore Jowita Sienczyk and senior Claudia Kitching recorded the fastest times in the backstroke (58.47) and breaststroke (1:04.69), respectively. Vaisse took second place in each of those events.
Newcomer Leigh Faires McGee made her North Texas debut by swimming the fastest time of the day in the 100-yard freestyle (53.15). Junior Brittany Thurstin and senior Sydney Buckley also placed in the top 10.
"I don't want to see a repeat of last week," Roth said. "I want to see improvement."
