Behind the Blocks with Ashley Stone

Sept. 6, 2016

DENTON - Behind the Blocks is a new weekly feature that gives Mean Green swimming and diving fans the opportunity to get to know the athletes better. Senior Ash Stone headlines the initial installment.

Name: Ashley Stone
Class: Senior
Event: Backstroke
Hometown: Sydney, Australia

Q: How does Denton differ from your hometown?

A: A lot, but the best thing about Denton is the people. Everyone is so nice and accepts who you are, that’s what I love the most. Also, the cool food places you find- always very good!

Q: Who or what got you into the sport?

A: Growing up near the beach just made me a water baby. I loved being in the ocean, so eventually I learned to swim so my parents didn’t worry when I was in the ocean. I chose to swim competitively over being a ballerina… good choice by me.

Q: What is your favorite event to compete in?

A: Always relays!! They are so much fun because you get to do it with/for your team.

Q: What is an event you hope to never compete in?

A: I hope to never ever compete in the 200 breaststroke, 200 fly, and 400 IM.

Q: What are you looking forward to most about the upcoming season?

A: I think this season is going to be great. I looking forward to the change in staff. I think both coaches are going to make a big difference to the team. I think this will be the best season yet. I am also excited to be back with the team for one last season, it is always such a fun environment to be in.

Q: What is your favorite sport to watch during the Olympics?

A: I love it all!! Swimming is my favorite (of course), but rowing, gymnastics, track, and triathlete events are cool to watch as well.

Q: Who is your team family?

A: The incredible family is Isabelle, and Kathleen.

Q: Do you have a hidden (or not so hidden) talent?

A: Does eating and talking a lot count??

Q: If you could trade places with one person, who would it be and why?

A: I would trade places with a travel bug, in Europe – go explore the world and not care about a thing. You just get to eat, meet new people and see the world. That sounds amazing to me… Maybe one-day I’ll do it. 

Q: As a senior, what will you miss most about the team?

A: I am going to miss having the support of everyone constantly. It does not matter what sort of day you have, they are always there for you and want to make you smile. We just have so much fun in and out of the pool, so that’s something I’ll miss every day.
