DENTON (5/31/07) North Texas head coach Joe Dykstra has announced the 2007-08 swimming and diving schedule, highlighted by clashes with three of last year’s top 15 teams.
“It is a very ambitious schedule with dual meet competition against teams from the SEC, Missouri Valley, Big XII, Mountain West, Conference USA, and the Sun Belt,” Dykstra said. “I am very excited about the opportunity to race against such great competition. This schedule will help us continue to elevate the program in the conference and nationally, and also attract a lot of attention to what we're doing here at North Texas.”
The squad will kick off the season Sept. 29 with the annual Green .vs. White meet at the Pohl Recreation Center. Four days later the Mean Green will play host to TCU and perennial powerhouse SMU at the Mean Green Relays.
The Mean Green Relays will consist of a relay-only format, the only time that the Mean Green will use that format in 2007-08. The Mustangs claimed their 11th consecutive conference crown in 2007, while the Horned Frogs and the Mean Green met up twice last season.
North Texas will get a second crack at each team as the Mean Green will head to SMU on Nov. 9 for a tri-meet versus the Mustangs and Wyoming. The Mean Green travels to Ft. Worth to battle TCU on Feb. 6 in dual meet action.
In addition to the local rivalries, Dykstra has added national powers onto the docket in Texas A&M and Georgia. October 12 will mark the first time the Mean Green has ever met up with the Bulldogs, who finished seventh at last season’s NCAA Championships. That matchup will take place in Fayetteville, Ark., as Arkansas will host the three teams.
Texas A&M - the reigning Big XII champions - will invade Denton on Oct. 27 along with Northern Arizona.
The Mean Green will head to Las Vegas Dec. 15-17 for the UNLV Winter Invitational. The meet brings teams from around the nation and uses a format that mimics the format at the Sun Belt Championships.
Missouri State, New Orleans, Rice and New Mexico State round out the head-to-head slate with New Orleans coming to Denton on Feb. 9, for the final tuneup before the SBC Championships. The SBC Championships will take place Feb. 28-March 1, and for the second consecutive season will be held in Nashville, Tenn.
North Texas is coming off its most successful season in the history of the program, culminating in a fourth-place finish at the SBC Championships in February. In his first season in charge, Dykstra guided the Mean Green to 17 school records over the course of the 2006-07 season.
