Dykstra Announces 2009-10 Incoming Class

DENTON, Texas (5/20/09) - After wrapping up the best conference finish in school history this past season, North Texas swimming & diving head coach Joe Dykstra announced on Wednesday the Mean Green's 2009-10 incoming class. This class totals eight newcomers including five swimmers and three divers. Seven are from the state of Texas while one hails all the way from Finland.

“Despite only graduating one senior this year, we were able to put together a really terrific class," said Dykstra. "These newcomers will fill the holes in our line-up, double the size of our diving squad, and continue to elevate our program to new levels of success.”

SWIMMERS

Shannon Dwyer

Area Team: Ft. Worth Area Swim Team

Top Times: 58.63 (100 Butterfly), 2:07.79 (200 Butterfly), 2:09.02 (200 IM)

Also recruited by: Colorado State, TCU

“Shannon is going to be a great addition to the team. She is a very good butterfly swimmer and I think can potentially turn into a great IM’er and freestyler also. She is tall and athletic and will be able to contribute for us right off the bat this fall.” Joe Dykstra

Bryn Lewis
High School: Round Rock HS
Hometown: Round Rock, TX

Area Team: AquaTex Swim Team

Top Times: 58.53 (100 Butterfly), 2:13.51 (200 Butterfly), 25.20 (50 Freestyle), 54.52 (100 Freestyle)

“Bryn is one of those student-athletes that you love to have in your program. She is a great student, a great citizen, has great leadership skills, and I think is going to get a lot faster in college. She will add depth to our sprint and butterfly groups.” Joe Dykstra

Hannele Luoma
High School: Somero Lukio HS

Hometown: Somero, Finland
Awards and Honors: Six Finnish Championship Medals (2007-09)
Top Times: 1:05.74* (100 Breaststroke), 2:20.30* (200 Breaststroke), 2:07.14* (200 IM), 4:28.32* (400 IM) *Times are converted from a metric pool

Also recruited by: Denver, Rhode Island

“We are really, really excited to welcome Hannele into the program. She swims the events that were the weakest for us this past year and swims them at a very high level. As accomplished as she already is as a swimmer in Finland, she has so much room for improvement. She comes from a small town of only 10,000 residents and trains on a tiny club of just 14 swimmers that her father coaches in an old 4-lane pool. When you study the video of her races, it becomes apparent how much natural talent Hannele possesses. When she gets a chance to start training in our program, I anticipate her becoming one of the top swimmers in the Sun Belt and hopefully an Olympian for Finland in 2012.” Joe Dykstra

Rebecca Ploetz
High School: Churchill HS (Four-Year Letterwinner in Swimming)

Hometown: San Antonio, TX

Awards and Honors: All-American (2007-09), Junior and Senior Captain, Hardest Worker (2006-07), Rookie Of The Year (2005-06)

Also recruited by: Army, Incarnate Word

“Becca is a very capable breaststroker and IM’er, who has also recently made some big strides in sprint freestyle. She split a 51 this year as a part of Churchill’s 400 free relay and having had the opportunity to watch her swim this spring, I know she is only going to continue to improve and help us in a variety of events.” Joe Dykstra

Catia Weickgenant

High School: Lakewood Presbyterian HS (No Swim Team)
Hometown: Dallas, TX
Area Team: Dallas Mustangs
Awards and Honors
: Golden Mustang

Top Times: 50.93* (100 Freestyle), 1:51.42 (200 Freestyle), 5:07.22 (500 Freestyle), 57.85 (100 Butterfly), 2:05.24 (200 Butterfly)

*Faster than the current school record at North Texas (51.16)
Also recruited by: Rice, Miami (OH)

“Catia is going to be a real program changer for us. Our free relays all got faster the day she signed her NLI. She is a terrific flyer, great mid-distance freestyler, and is accustomed to training and competing at the highest level with the Dallas Mustangs. Adding Catia to our already potent stable of freestylers makes us a much better team.” Joe Dykstra

DIVERS

Jessica Bills
High School: Atascocita HS

Hometown: Humble, TX

Awards and Honors: Record Holder in six and 11-Dive, Female MVP Varsity Gymnastics 2006-07

Jordan Engel
High School: McKinney North HS

Hometown: McKinney, TX

“Jordan is a newcomer to the sport having just started this past season. But In just one short high school season, she managed to place 2nd at Districts and 7th at Regionals for McKinney North. That demonstrates her natural ability and aptitude for picking up the sport quickly which will help her as she learns to dive at this level.” Joe Dykstra

Monica Wolfe
High School: Coronado HS (Three-Year Letterwinner in Diving)

Hometown: Lubbock, TX

Awards and Honors: Team Captain (2008-09), Pete Ragus “Team First” Award (2008-09), Most Improved Diver (2007-08)
