Nyheim-Canales Named North Texas Swimming & Diving Coach

DENTON (4/10/02) North Texas Athletic Director Rick Villarreal has announced that Mona E. Nyheim-Canales has been named head women’s swimming and diving coach.

A six-year veteran NCAA coach, Nyheim-Canales has spent the last four years as the senior coach for the City of Plano Swimmers (COPS), where she developed some of the city’s top junior and senior swimmers. As the senior coach for the COPS program, Nyheim-Canales was in charge of the strength and conditioning program for the swimmers.

"It’s an exciting challenge coming to a team that doesn’t have a lot of history," said Nyheim-Canales. "We can create our own destiny and that is exciting for our athletes and for me as a coach. I want to bring some stability and consistency to the program that we can build on for the future."

Throughout her coaching career, Nyheim-Canales has experience at a number of different settings, from the developmental programs to the highly ranked NCAA Division I. While making stops as an assistant coach at places such as the University of Houston (1990-94) and the University of Illinois (1994-96), she coached several Olympians, National Team members and All-American’s. During her time at Houston and Illinois, Nyheim-Canales was responsible for practices, recruiting, trip scheduling and various other coaching responsibilities.

Outside of the collegiate coaching arena, Nyheim-Canales has also taken on coaching duties at the National Swim Camp (1988), the Space City Aquatic Club (1990-91), the Coastal Swim Club (1991-92), the South Belt Area Swim Team (1991-94) and with the Dallas Mustangs (1996-99).

Nyheim-Canales is a 1989 graduate from the University of Arizona, where she was on a full four-year scholarship for swimming excellence and a varsity letterwinner all four years. Since graduating from Arizona with a bachelor’s degree in Business Economics and Marketing, she has achieved her Master’s degree in Physical Education from Houston in 1995 and is currently a Ph.D. candidate at Illinois.
