DENTON, Texas - North Texas swimming and diving held its annual postseason banquet to reflect upon the season and present well-deserved awards and honors to the swimmers and divers that performed at a high level during the best year in the program’s history.
Led by Sun Belt Coach of the Year Joe Dykstra, the squad reached new heights, setting school records in 14 of 22 events and boasting a second-place finish at the final Sun Belt Conference Swimming & Diving Championships.
Furthermore, the Mean Green entered unchartered waters as it sent its first swimmer to the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships in Indianapolis after sophomore Kimmy Phillips’s conference record-breaking time of 16:13.58 earned an invitation to the elite meet.
At the awards banquet, nine Mean Green swimmers and divers were celebrated for their achievements during the season.
Sarida Muslow, Natalie Jakopin and Rebecca Taylor were named the three captains for the 2013-2014 Mean Green swimming and diving team.
Most Improved: Freshman diver Jasmine Abercrombie.
Most Inspirational: Natalie Jakopin and Sarida Muslow
Ultimate Athlete Award (strength and conditioning): Krista Rossum
Hardest Worker Award: Mona Groteguth and Krista Rossum
Most Outstanding Diver Award: Catherine Johnson and Rebecca Taylor
Most Valuable Rookie: Jana Burkard
Most Valuable Veteran: Catia Weickgenant
