Women's Swimming And Diving Compete In First Day Of Sun Belt Championship




DENTON (2/17/05)-After day one of competition at the Sun Belt Swimming and Diving Championships in Little Rock, Ark., the NT women’s swimming and diving team is in sixth place with 89 points.  The Mean Green trails Florida International and New Mexico State, both tied for fourth place, by three points.

 

The morning prelims began Friday, February 17, at 10:30 a.m. and were followed that evening by the finals.  Mean Green swimmers qualified for finals in five of the six events.

 

Freshman newcomer Bonnie Garcia-Meitin gave the Mean Green its top finish in an individual event by placing eighth in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.37, which set a school record.  Sophomore Gwen Rourke came in eleventh place in the 200 individual medley with the time 2:13.24.  Another freshman newcomer, Amanda Neal, finished sixteenth in the finals for the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.00.  Freshman diver Lauren Page placed seventh in the one-meter dive with a score of 207.95.  Both the 200 freestyle relay (1:15.22) and 400 medley relay (3:33.34) teams finished fifth.

 

Tomorrow’s events will begin at 10:30 a.m. with morning prelims and finals will take place that evening at 6 p.m.
