Swim Team Travels To Little Rock, Ark. For Sun Belt Championship

DENTON (2/17/05) - The North Texas women's swimming and diving  team begins competition today at the Aropostale Sun Belt Conference Championship in Little Rock, Ark. After placing fifth in the conference last year, the Mean Green looks to improve its standing.

The Mean Green closed the regular season against TCU on Jan. 19 in a final dual meet for the season. The team has spent the last few weeks practicing and resting to prepare for the championship.

This season the Mean Green has set four school records. Three of them are held by sophomore Gwen Rourke. Rourke holds the record in both the 100 (1:06.88) and 200 (2:23.13) breaststroke. Rourke also set a record in the 200 medley with the time 2:11.59.

Sophomore Jaime Hosner broke the school record in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:36.79. Both Rourke and Hosner each recieved honors as Swimmer of the Week from the Sun Belt this season and freshman diver Lauren Page was named Diver of the Week.

Tickets are available at the UALR's Donaghey Center, and the morning trial events will begin each day at 10:30 a.m.The event, which will take place Thursday through Saturday, debuts the league’s newest sport: men’s swimming and diving. A total of eight women’s teams and four men’s teams will battle for the conference championship.
