DENTON, Texas (2/10/10)
- North Texas Swimming & Diving swept the Sun Belt Conference Swimming & Diving Player of the Week awards for the second time this year, the conference announced Wednesday.
Senior Kristen Hempleman was named the Swimmer of the Week and sophomore Delia Covo the Diver of the Week for their efforts against Texas A&M Saturday.
Hempleman had one of her best outings of the 2009-10 season. In the 400-yard Individual Medley, she shaved nearly four seconds off of her previous best this season, touching the wall in second with the time of 4:35.01.
The 200-yard backstroke saw Hempleman finish in second yet again, this time recording a time of 2:24.13, over two seconds faster than her previous high mark.
Covo, who set the three-meter diving record earlier this year, broke her own record Saturday. Collecting a second place finish, Covo scored a 262.13 which is nearly four points better than the school record.
She also set a career high from the one-meter springboard when she scored a 246.23, which was also good enough for second place.
With the sweep of the conference awards this week, the Mean Green now has nine players of the week on the year. Covo has won diver of the week three times now, matched by senior Alicia Hale's three swimmer of the week honors.
Junior Kendall Schmid (Diver) and sophomore Hiliary Riedmann (Swimmer) are the other two members of North Texas Swimming & Diving to win a player of the week award.
The Mean Green will now focus on the Sun Belt Conference Championships in Nashville, Tenn., on Feb. 17-20.
