Denton (02/08/2007) Katie Lowry was named Swimmer of the Week on Wednesday by the Sun Belt Conference for her successful performance against the University of New Orleans last weekend.
Lowry helped lead her team to a 143.5-111.5 victory by winning both the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:11.04, and the 500 freestyle in a time of 5:13.37. With that effort she proved to head coach Joe Dykstra that she could be a strong asset to the team at the conference championship next weekend.
“Katie has really worked hard to get back into shape after missing the first half of the season with an injury” said Dykstra. “ She had a great meet against New Orleans and should be able to build on that confidence and momentum next week in Nashville. She will really help the team.”
Lowry and her Mean Green teammates will hit the season’s climax next weekend in Nashville, Tenn., at the Sun Belt Conference championships. Dykstra feels as though defending champion Florida Atlantic is the odds-on favorite; however, the Mean Green’s steady improvement over the course of the season gives it the team’s best shot in recent history.
