DENTON, Texas -
North Texas senior Catherine Johnson was named Conference USA Diver of the Week after a winning performance at SMU last week.
Johnson collected seven weekly honors in her career, but this is her first award in C-USA. In her four years at North Texas, she is the only diver to qualify for the NCAA Zone Meet four consecutive years. Johnson has medaled in every conference championship so far. She holds the school record for the one-meter dive and has second highest score in three-meter and platform. In 2013, she was named CSCAA Honorable Mention Scholar All-America for the second time and made the dean’s list.
Johnson will be one of four seniors on the team who will be honored prior to Wednesday’s dual meet against TCU, which begins at 6 p.m.
Fellow diver Rebecca Taylor has trained all four years with Johnson and under diving coach Jim Pyrch. Taylor qualified this year for the NCAA Zone Meet, her third year at Zone’s, after placing 15th on the three-meter at the NCAA meet in 2013. In 2013, she earned conference diver of the week once, broke the school record in the platform and three-meter dive, and currently sits second all-time at North Texas on the one-meter board.
Mean Green captains Sarida Muslow and Natalie Jakopin will be honored by head coach Brendon Bray for their leadership going into their final meet at the Pohl Recreation Center.
Muslow is a four-year letter winner for the Mean Green. She was a three-time finalist at the Sun Belt Conference championships in the 100 and 200 breaststroke.
Jakopin, a Canadian native, has totaled over 20 top-five finishes in her career. In 2011, she was a consolation finalist in the 200 IM. Academically, she has been on the dean’s list, Sun Belt commissioner’s list, and contributed to the highest team GPA in Division I swimming and diving.
Diving Wednesday begins at 4 p.m. in the PEB, and senior recognition will begin prior to the meets 6 p.m. start.
