DENTON, Texas (2/4/09) - The North Texas swimming & diving team could not match last year's defeat of TCU as the squad fell to the Horned Frogs 158-130 on Wednesday night in Denton.
There were many close races in the Mean Green's regular season finale, but TCU got a bigger share of the wins.
"I thought we swam well in this meet, but they (TCU) were just better," NT head coach Joe Dykstra said. "Unfortunately we couldn't pull out enough of the close races. I did see some signs from the team that look to be in our favor going into the conference championships."
The victories in the swimming events for the Mean Green included three individual and one relay.
Seabre Pope took home first in the 50 Freestyle (24.27) barely finishing ahead of teammate Nicole Leslie (24.51). In the 200 Backstroke, Sarah Standlee won by almost two seconds (2:04.84) over Jenny Oster of TCU. Standout freshman Rosa Gentile got the win in the 100 Butterfly (57.38) by less than a second against the Horned Frogs' Stephanie Futscher (57.82).
North Texas also won the final event of the day, the 200 Freestyle Relay, by a hair. The Mean Green's Morgan Morrow, Nicole Leslie, Rosa Gentile, and Seabre Pope finished with a time of 1:38.46 while TCU's team recorded a 1:38.59.
In diving, North Texas put up solid marks in the one meter. Delia Covo was awarded a high score of 224.63 while Kim Nelson-Wulff recorded a career-high of 212.47.
The Mean Green gets two weeks off before heading to Nashville, Tennessee for the Sun Belt Conference Championships. These will begin on Wednesday, February 18 and conclude on Saturday, February 21.
North Texas finished fourth out of seven teams at last year's SBC Championships.
