A Day In The Life Of Mean Green Swimmer Nicki Leslie

DENTON, Texas (1/30/08) Go to class, watch TV, and an occasional nap; it’s just a few activities you’d expect from a typical college student. Now throw in two hours of practice and lifting weights before most people have even began their work day and you have the morning of Nicki Leslie. MeanGreenSports.com recently tagged along with the sophomore swimmer from Alvin, Texas to find out what a day in the life is like for Nicki Leslie.

5:30 a.m. Leslie’s alarm goes off signaling the beginning of a very long day for the North Texas record holder in the 50 freestyle.

6:03 a.m. After grabbing a quick bite of what she calls “The Breakfast of Champions”, a.k.a. a donut, Leslie and roommate Christine O’Connell leave their apartment on their way to a morning workout.

6:16 a.m. Once she arrives at the Pohl Recreation Center, Leslie stretches before jumping into the pool and proceeding with her one hour morning swim.

7:19 a.m. Leslie and fellow members of the North Texas swimming and diving team head to the Mean Green Athletic Center to continue with their early-morning wourkout by lifting weights with North Texas assistant strength and conditioning coach Ricky Lefebvre.

8:35 a.m. After taking a shower once she arrives back at her apartment, Leslie sits down for a not-so-rushed breakfast like the one she had a few hours earlier. Her breakfast of choice? A bowl of Honey Bunches of Oats. “They’re just so delicious,” Leslie says as she pours the cereal into a bowl.

8:51 a.m. Leslie’s cell phones rings as she is getting ready to go to class. “Hey. How’s your day going so far?” the person on the other end of the phone asks. It’s Leslie’s mom just wanting to call and say hi.

9:07 a.m. “I don’t know why I always wait to the absolute last minute to leave my apartment,” Leslie says as she circles Fouts Field parking lot searching for somewhere to park. “Now I’m going to have to power walk like crazy to get to class.”

9:26 a.m. Leslie takes a seat next to teammate Hannah Bakke and now switches gears into student mode, four hours already in to her busy day.

11:44 a.m. Following her professional selling and government classes, Leslie heads over to the art building to work on her portfolio review that every interior design major is required to do.

11:53 a.m. Leslie begins working on one of her four art pieces for her portfolio; a two-point charcoal perspective of the interior of the art building.

1:28 p.m. Continuing with the daily grind of workouts, Leslie gets to a stopping point of her drawing and begins making her way to the rec center for another practice, this time a two hour swim.

4:08 p.m. Looking forward to the next few hours she can catch up with errands she needs to run before she has to her weekly Monday night class, Leslie heads to the grocery store.

4:22 p.m. “We buy a lot of milk,” Leslie says as she puts a gallon of two percent milk into the buggy. “There is usually so much milk in our refrigerator it looks like we have a farm.”

5:41 p.m. Leslie returns back to campus for her three hour long night class on interior design.

8:48 p.m. After being on the go for the last 13 hours, Leslie is finally ready to wind down after her long day. “Thank God for TiVO,” Leslie says as she sits down to watch episodes of Kyle XY and Wildfire that she missed while she was in class. “My roommates make fun of me so much, but I love ABC Family.”

9:41 p.m. Leslie finishes watching her shows before heading off to bed and starting another day over in the life of ... Nicki Leslie.
