North Texas Swimming & Diving Claims Tiger Invitational Championship

TYLER, Tex. (1/26/02) - The North Texas women’s swimming and diving team took first place at the Trinity University Tiger Invitational over the weekend, finishing ahead of six other teams at the meet.

The Mean Green, coming off a second place finish at the UALR Christmas Invitational (Nov. 30-Dec. 1), was competing in its first meet of the Spring season.

North Texas scored 1,131 points to finish ahead of second-place Trinity Univ. with 1,048 points and easily defeated the remaining five schools at the meet, which included Southwestern Univ. (443), McMurry Univ. (232), Austin College (181), Palo Alto Community College (36) and Incarnate Word Univ. (19).

The Mean Green took first place in all three relay events and captured the top spot in seven of the 12 individual events. Freshman Bethany Pipes (San Antonio, Tex.) led North Texas with three first place finishes in the 500 yard freestyle (5:13.50), 100 yard backstroke (1:01.68) and 200 yard backstroke (2:11.85). Also claiming first place finishes in an event were Melissa Whitaker (Jr.; San Antonio, Tex.), Kara Brock (Fr.; Spring, Tex.), Charity Dillow (Jr.; Wylie, Tex.) and Kristin Carson (Jr.; Midland, Tex.).

Whitaker, who qualified for the NCAA Zone D Diving Championships last season, set a school record in the three-meter diving event with a score of 358.45. She took first place in the event, topping second place by 41.45 points.

The Mean Green next competes at the Sun Belt Conference Championships, scheduled for February 14-16.
