Mean Green Set For Final Two Home Duals Of 2009-10

DENTON, Texas (1/21/10) - Mean Green Swimming & Diving is set to make its last two home appearances of the year Friday against Houston at 6:30 p.m., and at 11 a.m. Saturday against Rice at the Pohl Recreation Center.

North Texas (7-4) is coming off a huge win in Fort Worth last Friday night against TCU and looks to carry that momentum into these duals.

"I am excited for our last two home meets of the season this weekend," said head coach Joe Dykstra.  "Both meets should be highly competitive and hopefully we can build off of the momentum we established last week at TCU."

Houston (5-5) comes into the meet well rested; having not swam since Nov. 22 at the Cougar Classic Fall Invite where they placed fourth.

"Houston has probably the best diver in the NCAA and 6-7 outstanding swimmers, so we will have to rely on our depth to keep the meet close and have a shot at the end," said Dykstra.

Notes

The world class diver Dykstra refers to is Anastasia Pozdniakova, best known for her silver medal at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing. Pozdniakova is also the reigning NCAA Champion on the 1-meter board and a two time runner-up on the three meter.

Saturday features the last time the nine seniors will participate in a meet at home. These nine seniors are the first class to spend all four years under Dykstra and will leave as the winningest class in school history.

Rice (3-2) hasn't swam since Dec. 21 at the Delta State Invitational. The Owls are a much deeper team than Houston and match up very well with the Mean Green.

"Both of our opponents will be very tough and I am hopeful we will rise to the level of the competition," Dykstra added.

Mean Green Swimming & Diving would also like to use these meets as a chance to raise awareness within the North Texas community of the disasters and relief efforts are on-going in Haiti.

Flyers will be on hand with information on how people can donate to different organizations assisting the country of Haiti during this time.

"This tragedy has touched me personally as a former swimmer of mine was badly injured and her brother killed when the orphanage they were volunteering at collapsed," Dykstra said.

Erin Kloos, a former-swimmer at the University of Washington, is currently in stable condition in a South Florida hospital's intensive care unit recovering from the injuries she sustained in the disaster.
