DENTON -- The North Texas swimming and diving team dives into 2016 action with winter training in California. The swimmers will be training and competing in San Diego, highlighted by the San Diego Shootout on Saturday, while the divers will be training on the campus of UCLA.

The Mean Green, ranked No. 44 in College Swimming's mid-major team rankings, will begin its week of training with a scrimmage against San Diego on Friday. North Texas will also battle San Diego in a dual and shootout format on Saturday. The Mean Green will conclude its California training with another scrimmage against San Diego State, which is ranked No. 8 in the mid-major rankings and No. 42 overall in the nation.

Sophomore Claudia Kitching, who holds two NCAA B time standards in the 200-yard breaststroke, boasts Conference USA's fastest time (2:13.51) and four of the six fastest times in the event.

Fellow sophomore Caroline Culpepper and Sarah Vaisse also enter the weekend with the league's fastest times in the 200-yard butterfly and 100-yard breaststroke, respectively. Vaisse is also coming off a first-place finish in the 200 individual medley at the Incarnate Word Christmas Invitational.

The weekend's meets will also mark the debut of freshmen Rebekah Bradley (Auckland, New Zealand) and Sara Whelan (Port Coquitlam, B.C.). Bradley is a national champion and current holder of three New Zealand age group records, while Whelan competed alongside fellow teammates Natalia Kwiatkowska and Isabelle Morris at the 2015 Canadian Swimming Trials.

The divers began their training on Wednesday, and it will continue through January 13 with afternoon training and night training at UCLA. They will be working mainly on their platform diving to prepare for the remainder of their season, highlighted by the conference championships in Atlanta on Feb. 24-27.

The swimmers and divers will then return to the pool, competing jointly in a double-dual meet against UALR and Southern Illinois in Little Rock on Saturday, Jan. 16.
