NEW ORLEANS (1/9/05) -Three Mean Green swimmers have continued to be the driving force for the North Texas women's swimming and diving team in competition this season. Three-time All-Conference swimmer Bethany Pipes, sophomore Gwen Rourke and freshman newcomer Bonnie Garcia-Meitin have led the leader boards for NT meet after meet.
This weekend was no different when the team traveled to New Orleans, Louisiana, to compete in the Sugar Bowl Invitational. After the final day of competition, the Mean Green finished in fourth place with a total of 453.5 points, behind Tulane, North Florida and Akron.
Pipes had top finishes in both the 200 and 500 freestyles. She placed third in the 200 with a time of 1:57.71 and fifth in the 500 with the time 5:12.17. Rourke took home first place honors for the Mean Green in the 100 breaststroke with the time 1:08.16. She also placed fifth in the 200 IM (2:13.32). Garcia-Meitin finished second in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:11.70. She swam the 100 backstroke in 1:01.19 placing her in fourth.
The three swimmers, with the addition of sophomores Devon Dlouhy and Emi Tudose, were members of the 400 IM relay and the 800 freestyle relay that both gave the Mean Green a fourth-place finish.
Teams competing in the Sugar Bowl Invitational included Tulane, Univ. of North Florida, Univ. of Akron, Spring Hill College, Ouachita Baptist Univ., and Univ. of New Orleans.
The Mean Green will swim next at home in Denton on Jan. 14 in the NT Student Recreation Center against SMU and Houston. The meet begins at 6 p.m.
