Swimming Retains No. 24 Mid-Major Ranking

DENTON (1/5/07) The North Texas swimming and diving team retained its No. 24 ranking in a poll of mid-major schools by CollegeSwimming.com for the week of January 2. The Mean Green was ranked 24th in the first mid-major poll earlier in the season.

The Mean Green (4-2) ended 2006 by winning the UALR Christmas Invitational, overcoming a 23-point deficit in the final day. Under first-year head coach Joe Dykstra, the team has broken 13 school records and posted 30 times that rank in the top five in school history.

Freshman Alicia Hale was named the Sun Belt Swimmer of the Week (12/6/06) after her performance at the UALR meet. She was named Co-Swimmer of the Meet, winning three individual events and breaking two school records. Overall, Hale has won thirteen events in six meets and was the only North Texas event winner against No. 7 SMU (11/10/06). She has set four school records and has six separate times that rank in the top-five in school history.

The mid-major rankings are designed to support and promote institutions that do not benefit from large football and basketball television agreements. Rankings are based on each team’s best dual meet lineup as judged and submitted by participating teams. Rankings are announced four times throughout the season.

The Mean Green returns to action on Jan. 12-13 when it travels to Houston to compete against Houston, FIU and New Mexico State. On Sunday, Jan. 14, North Texas returns home to host Texas A&M at 11 am in the Pohl Recreation Center.
