DENTON, Texas (10/17/09) - Mean Green Swimming and Diving captured their second straight dual win Saturday morning when it downed the University of New Orleans 177-109.
North Texas (2-0) jumped out to an early lead, winning three of the first four events, and never looked back.
North Texas vs. UNO Results
"I am really proud of this team," head coach Joe Dykstra said. "We were nowhere near 100% today, after having battled this flu outbreak all week, but I challenged the team to step up and fight through adversity. We discussed how championship teams find ways to get the job done no matter what obstacles or circumstances they encounter, and I feel like the squad really responded to that today. We were able to step up to a tough challenge and win this meet over a tough New Orleans squad."
A couple of sophomores had big days for the Mean Green. Seabre Pope took home first place finishes in three of her four events, while claiming second in the other, and Hiliary Riedmann stepped up and collected four first place finishes.
"I am especially proud of the job Hiliary Riedmann did today," Dykstra added. "She took a huge step forward as a swimmer and leader for us today, winning 3 individual races and swimming on our medley relay that came from behind to win the opening race."
With the second dual win this season, the Mean Green have exceeded their dual meet win total from last season, which was one. The lone dual win from the 2008-09 campaign was against these same UNO Privateers 171-116.
North Texas will be back in action Saturday, Oct. 24 in Denver, Colo., and will take on Denver and Utah in a double-dual.
