Mean Green Defeat Little Rock In Season Opener
North Texas Wins, 183-106
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - In the first dual meet of the 2017-18 season, the North Texas swimming and diving team defeated Little Rock, 183-106. Junior Brittany Thurstin led the way with four combined individual and relay victories.
"It was great getting to have the first true meet of the season," Thurstin said. "The coaches were giving great feedback and the girls were all excited for each others races."
Thurstin swam the final leg for the Mean Green in the 200-yard medley relay, helping the team to a first-place finish with a time of 1:47.92. The Bryan, Texas, native edged out teammate Emmabeth Jensen in both the 50-yard (24.32) and 100-yard (53.00) freestyle and wrapped up the day as the final swimmer in the 400-yard freestyle relay, taking the top spot with a time of 3:34.38.
"I think that feedback really helped push me toward success in the pool today," Thurstin said. "Everyone was working hard for each other."
Senior Claudia Kitching, who was part of the 200-medley win, also secured victories in the 100-yard (1:05.29) and 200-yard (2:19.29) breastroke.
Freshman Leigh Faires McGee contributed to North Texas' success in the freestyle events with a win in the 200-yard freestyle, clocking a time of 1:55.25. The Mean Green swept the top three times in the event as Deneen Carter (1:56.55) and Sara Whelan (1:56.84) took second and third, respectively.
Freshman diver Meghan Miller impressed in the three-meter dive with a score of 231.00 to take first place.
North Texas heads to Houston for dual meets with Rice and Houston on Oct. 21 and 22, respectively.
