ROCKWALL, Texas - The North Texas swimming and diving team took the silver medal for the first time in the Sun Belt Conference Swimming & Diving Championships.
Head coach Joe Dykstra was honored with Co-Coach of the Year honors at the end of the event.
Despite a lead entering the final day of action, Western Kentucky had too much firepower and overtook the lead in the final events of the night.
Sophomore Mona Groteguth led the Mean Green's initial charge in the final night of events. She posted a fourth-place finish in the 200 back.
Senior Becca Ploetz also grabbed third place in the 100 free for North Texas.
The highlight of the night for North Texas was sophomore Kimmy Phillips' record-setting 1650 free time of 16:13.58. The mark broke the school records in the 1650 and 1000 frees as well as the 1650 conference record. The time also was under the NCAA 'B' cut qualifying requirement.
The Mean Green scored a silver medal in the 200 yard breat where Krista Rossum edged out WKU's Claire Conlon by eitht tenths of a second.
Senior Catia Weickgenant grabbed her own silver medal in the 200 fly missing the NCAA 'B' cut qualifying time by less than a second.
The North Texas crew of Senior Becca Ploetz, Rossum, freshman Mackenzie Childs and Weickgenant took the silver in the 400 yard freestyle relay.
In the end, it was not enough as the Hilltoppers squeezed out a few more in what was a dogfight in the final day of the last Sun Belt Conference Swimming & Diving Championship.
