Rossum Sets NT Record In Second Day At Conference Meet
Mean Green Sits In Sixth Place With 130 Points
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Krista Rossum re-broke her record in the 200 individual medley on Thursday to headline the Mean Green’s day two action from the Conference USA Championships. With 130 total points, North Texas is in sixth place with 14 events remaining.
The senior’s record-breaking swim came in the day’s morning round as the Canadian clocked a preliminary time of 2:00.35, topping her previous school record by just one hundredth of a second. She would go on to place fifth in the 200 IM’s final round (2:00.64). Rossum’s times were good for NCAA B time standards, and they are the team’s top two times in that event this season.
Rossum wasn’t alone in setting top season times during Thursday’s women’s events. In fact, North Texas athletes set individual season-bests in each of the five events on the day.
Barbara Wasilewska finished the 500 freestyle with a personal season-best 4:56.19 time, finishing 16th overall. In the 50 free, freshman Isabelle Morris notched a 23.67 prelim time for her best mark of the year.
The 200 free relay team took fifth as Morris and Rossum were joined by Michelle Balcaen and Bianca Bocsa to claim a 1:33.74 time, the Mean Green’s best time of the season and the fourth-best performance in program history.
In the three-meter dive, sophomore Samantha Scheck (251.15) and junior Jasmine Abercrombie (246.45) finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Additionally, freshman Cecilia Hernandez tallied a new career-high to finish 13th (211.70), while freshman Allison Crites placed 15th overall (188.35)
"Our divers had a great day today and it was great to see so many lifetime bests from our swimmers," head coach Brendon Bray said. "I'm looking forward to better events for us tomorrow and moving up in the team standings."
The Mean Green now rests up for a packed day three from Knoxville. The team will compete in seven events in Friday’s action. As usual, preliminaries are set to begin at 9 a.m. CST, with a finals round planned for 5 p.m.
