Future Looks Bright for Mean Green Softball with 2015 Signing Class

Dec. 2, 2014

DENTON - Temperatures may be dropping as the North Texas community nears winter time, but things are already starting to heat up for head coach Tracey Kee and the Mean Green softball program ahead of its spring season. In her second season at the helm in Denton, Kee signed six standout athletes during the early signing period for her inaugural recruiting class at North Texas.

"My staff and I are truly excited to be welcoming all these families into our Mean Green family," Kee said. "This class understands the importance of academics and athletics going hand-in-hand. They are driven, hardworking, and competitive in all components of their lives."

After a record breaking first season under the current coaching staff that saw 31 victories and a trip to the Conference USA semifinals, Mean Green softball is gearing up to take a step to the next level. Lauren Craine (Aledo HS), Ki'Audra Hayter (Garrison HS), Rhylie Makawe (Aledo HS), Harley Perella (Frisco Heritage HS), Bailey Thompson (Deer Creek OK HS) and Casady Webb (Davis OK HS) all make up the six member 2015 class that will take aim at a very bright future for a program that is looking to reach new heights.

"We believe our program is taking an incredible step forward in adding this group of student-athletes," Kee added. "The versatility, athleticism, defensive capabilities and offensive production, will benefit our program for years to come."

Coach Kee on Craine: "I believe Lauren knows how to put her team in a position to win games. She's a fierce competitor who is only now beginning to see her own potential. Her skill set will mix well with our current staff."

Why Lauren chose North Texas: "My grandparents are alumni, and I have enjoyed hearing the stories about their days at North Texas, 50 years ago. I am excited for the opportunity to play softball at UNT, and it makes me so happy my grandparents will be able to watch my games. The University of North Texas is a wonderful school, and I feel so fortunate to be able to call it home."

Coach Kee on Makawe: "Rhylie's ability to drive the ball with power opposite field is something you typically do not see out of such a young player. She's a tough kid who takes every at-bat as if it were her last."

Why Rhylie chose North Texas: "I chose to attend North Texas because the academic programs available to me allow me to focus on my prospective major of environmental engineering while also having the opportunity to play the sport I love at a competitive collegiate level."

Coach Kee on Webb: "I believe Casady's ability to play multiple positions will allow us an opportunity to be creative in our line-ups. The fact that she has the experience to slide into the catcher position is another asset for our program."

Why Casady chose North Texas: "I played many softball games in the hopes of the 'right' coach seeing me on the 'right' day. After meeting Coach Kee, and hearing her vision for the softball program, I knew that I had found the right coach and that North Texas would be the perfect fit for me. I look forward to being a part of this up and coming program built on excellence that is on track to accomplish great things."

Coach Kee on Thompson: "Bailey's strength of tracking balls off the bat in the grass and covering large amounts of ground in doing so, will only help us as we move forward in strengthening our outfield play."

Why Bailey chose North Texas: "I chose North Texas to compete at the highest level, do something I love for four more years, and to get an education to help me become successful once softball is over. I chose UNT to compete for something bigger than myself and in the end that's a national championship. I'm excited for the future that will be filled with memories and bonds that will last a lifetime."

Coach Kee on Hayter: "Kay Kay has a way of always being on base. Her speed and utilization of drag bunts, power slaps and soft slaps, make her a tough out. Her athleticism and up-side will be nice to foster."

Why Ki'Audra chose North Texas: "One of the main reasons I chose the University of North Texas was because of the fashion in which the coaching staff recruited me. Coach Kee introduced herself in a very comforting and pleasing manner. I believe that her and her staff included are great people, and they made me feel right at home. I felt like Coach Kee and I bonded from the start. She seemed to take the game of softball serious; which is something I need. She is a hard working coach that is dedicated to the game and I feel like she will bring out the best in me. In addition, the campus is really nice and includes the field of study that I plan to major in. It's also not too far from my hometown; my family and I are very pleased with the distance factor. I really believe that North Texas will be a great fit for me!"

Coach Kee on Perella: "Harley's versatility and athleticism will allow us many options. She plays the left-side of the infield with sheer fire and grit."

Why Harley chose North Texas: "I chose North Texas because of the great environment and atmosphere the team and coaching staff create. I loved Coach Kee's vision for the team and I plan to join in and be a part of the uprising of the softball organization at North Texas."
