Softball Announces Spring Schedule

DENTON, Texas (11/7/12) - The University of North Texas has announced its 2013 softball schedule which features a home tournament at Lovelace Stadium and games against seven opponents that saw postseason play in 2012.

Under head coach T.J. Hubbard, the Mean Green has 12 home dates in 2013 including the three-day, five-team Lovelace Invitational. North Texas hosts the tournament February 15-17. Oklahoma State, Nebraska-Omaha, Iowa and Dayton will all compete in the tournament.

North Texas plays against seven teams that competed in the 2012 NCAA Tournament. Three of those teams (Texas, Louisiana-Lafayette and Oklahoma) advanced to the Super Regionals, and the Sooners advanced to the finals of the Women's College World Series.

The Mean Green will compete in four tournaments to start the 2013 season, all in the state of Texas. North Texas opens the season against Memphis  at the Texas Tournament in Austin. North Texas is 1-1 all-time against Memphis. The Mean Green will also face Texas and Texas A&M Corpus Christi.

After the home tournament, North Texas travels to San Marcos for the second annual Texas Shootout Feb. 21-24. Hosted by Texas State, the shootout will feature some of the top teams in Texas. The Mean Green will play Texas State, Texas Tech, Baylor and UTA. The Red Raiders, Bobcats and Bears all saw postseason play.

North Texas returns to San Marcos the following weekend for the CenturyLink Classic. In addition to seeing Texas State and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi again, North Texas will play Purdue for the first time in school history.

The Mean Green will play its final season in the Sun Belt Conference in 2013. North Texas opens the conference schedule at home against FIU March 9-10, a future Conference USA opponent. Other Sun Belt foes making their way to Denton include Troy, Louisiana-Lafayette and ULM. North Texas also hosts non-conference opponents Baylor (April 17) and UTA (April 30).

North Texas visits Big 12 neighbors, Oklahoma State on March 20 and Oklahoma on April 10. The Mean Green rounds out its regular season with a road game against Stephen F. Austin on May 1.

Troy hosts the Sun Belt Championship May 8-11. The top eight teams advance to the conference tournament.

North Texas returns 11 letterwinners, seniors Lesley Hirsch and Brittany Simmons and all-conference player Brooke Foster. The Mean Green finished the 2012 season with a 28-26-1 overall record.
