DENTON, Texas (11/1/10) - The University of North Texas has announced its 2011 softball schedule which features two home tournaments and games against nine teams that played in last year’s NCAA Tournament.
Under head coach T.J. Hubbard, the Mean Green has 24 home dates in 2011, including the three-day, five-team Sleep Inn Classic in February. The five-team tournament includes Nebraska, who advanced to the NCAA Tournament last year. The Mean Green is also hosting the Courtyard Classic, a three-day, six-team tournament, in March.
“We are excited to have another strong schedule of Big 12 schools and to be facing Nebraska and Missouri for the first time,” said head coach T.J. Hubbard. “It could very well be one of our toughest schedules with the combination of the Kajikawa Classic and the field of teams from our two tournaments.”
The Mean Green is playing Missouri for the first time in a home contest on Wednesday, March 30. Missouri played in last year’s College World Series after defeating Oregon in the Super Regionals. North Texas is playing Oregon in its season-opening tournament, the Kajikawa Classic, at Arizona State. The Mean Green will also face Stanford, Oregon State and Northwestern in the February tournament. North Texas has not played in the state of Arizona since the 2004 season.
“We are excited and eager to face several Pac-10 opponents early and see how we match up against the West Coast competition,” said Hubbard about playing in the Kajikawa Classic.
The Mean Green continues to play against the top teams in the Big 12. North Texas will travel to Texas on April 14 after defeating the ranked Longhorns, 1-0, last year at home. NT will also face Oklahoma (March 2) at home and on the road (May 5). North Texas will host Baylor on Wednesday, March 16, after sweeping the Bears in a doubleheader in Waco last year. The Mean Green will also face Oklahoma State on the road on March 23. Texas, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State all advanced to post-season play in 2010.
For the fourth straight year, North Texas will host two charity games. The Play For Kay Day (Leukemia and Lymphoma Society) is set for March 9 against Missouri State and the Strikeout Cancer Game is scheduled for May 4th against UTA.
Instead of finishing up conference play against Louisiana-Lafayette, North Texas is opening Sun Belt action on March 12-13 against the Ragin’ Cajuns at home. ULL won last year’s conference championship and advanced to the Super Regionals. Louisiana-Lafayette is hosting the conference tournament on May 11-14.
Other Sun Belt foes making their way to Denton include FIU, ULM and Troy. The Golden Panthers received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, while Troy defeated the Mean Green twice in last year’s conference tournament.
North Texas returns 13 letterwinners, including senior all-conference players Mariza Martinez and Mallory Cantler. The Mean Green finished the 2010 season with a 29-20 record and a 12-9 mark in Sun Belt Conference play.
