Mean Green Softball Releases 2012 Schedule

DENTON, Texas (10/19/11) - The University of North Texas has announced its 2012 softball schedule which features the Fairfield Inn & Suites Classic at Lovelace Stadium and games against nine opponents that saw post-season play in 2011.

Under head coach T.J. Hubbard, the Mean Green has 14 home dates in 2012 including the three-day, seven-team Fairfield Inn & Suites Classic. North Texas hosts the tournament along with TWU on February 17-19. Creighton, Northern Illinois, Missouri State, Wichita State, Sam Houston and South Dakota State will all compete in the tournament.

North Texas fields one of its toughest schedules in recent history, playing against nine teams that competed in the 2011 NCAA Tournament. Three of those teams (Oklahoma State, Oklahoma and Baylor) advanced to the Women’s College World Series.

The Mean Green will compete in four tournaments to start off the 2012 season, leading off with the University of Houston Tournament on February 10-12. NT faces Houston for the first time in school history. North Texas opens the season against Oklahoma State, an opponent the Mean Green has not defeated in its last five meetings. Houston lost to Oklahoma State in the NCAA Super Regionals.

After returning home to host its annual tournament, North Texas will play in the first-ever Texas Shootout in Waco, Texas on Feb. 24-26. Hosted by Baylor, the shootout will feature some of the top teams in Texas. The Mean Green will play Texas State, Texas Tech, Stephen F. Austin and Baylor. The Red Raiders, Bobcats and Bears all saw post-season play.

Following a home game against Oklahoma on February 29, North Texas travels to Tulsa, Okla. to compete in the Golden Hurricane’s home tournament for the first time since 2007. North Texas will face Loyola-Chicago and Austin Peay College for the first time on March 2-3.

For the second year in a row, North Texas opens Sun Belt play against reigning conference champions Louisiana-Lafayette. The Mean Green plays in Lafayette, La., on March 10-11.  NT defeated nationally-ranked ULL for the first time during conference play last year, taking one game in the three-game series.

The Mean Green will spend its spring break in Florida, playing Hartford and South Florida in Tampa on March 21 and Dartmouth in Fort Myers on March 22. North Texas will round out its week-long trip with a three-game series against conference opponent FIU in Miami, Fla., on March 24-25. The Mean Green has the opportunity to make a second trip to the Sunshine State in May when Florida Atlantic hosts the conference tournament on May 9-12. The top eight teams advance to the conference tournament.

For the fifth straight year, North Texas will host two charity games. The second-annual Wounded Warrior Project charity game is set for March 17 against Middle Tennessee and the Play For Kay Day (Leukemia and Lymphoma Society) is scheduled for May 2 against Stephen F. Austin.

The Mean Green raised more than $4,700 through t-shirt sales and donations at the gate for its three charity games in 2011. Over the last four years, the North Texas softball team has raised $4,000 for the DFW’s Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and $6,000 for the American Cancer Society through the Play for Kay and Strikeout Cancer Games. For its first Wounded Warrior Project charity game, North Texas raised $2,700 in 2011 for the charity whose mission is to honor and empower wounded warriors.

North Texas will open conference play at home on March 17-18 against Middle Tennessee. Other Sun Belt foes making their way to Denton include Western Kentucky, Florida Atlantic and South Alabama. Senior Day is set for Saturday, May 5 against Northwestern State.

North Texas returns 13 letterwinners, seniors Caitlin Grimes, Lisa Johnson and Megan Rupp, and all-conference player Brooke Foster. The Mean Green finished the 2011 season with a 22-30 overall record.
