New Look Mean Green Softball Looks To Pick Up Right Where They Left Off In 2013
Aug. 18, 2014
DENTON—The Mean Green softball team released its 2014 fall schedule, highlighted by a trip to Norman, OK, for a matchup with 2014 Women's College World Series quarterfinalist and Big 12 champion Oklahoma.
"I am excited for this season to get underway," head coach Tracy Kee said. "Being able to play fall games will allow us an opportunity to witness firsthand the different looks we will be using this year in our line-up. That glimpse will be pivotal in regards to dialing in our key focus points as a staff."
The summer offseason saw a few shakeups within the coaching staff, as Kee added two new assistant coaches, Natalie Kozlowski and Christina Merrida, both of whom have ties to Kee's days at East Carolina.
"Adding coach Kozlowski and coach Merrida, will truly help this year's squad reach its full potential. From day one, our goal has been to take this program to the NCAAs while obtaining a conference championship," coach Kee added. "With clear vision, a blue collar approach and a relentless desire to compete every pitch of every inning, I feel we are headed in the right direction."
Kee is entering her second year at the helm of the North Texas softball program, and looks to continue the early success she brought to Denton last year. In her first year, the Mean Green soared to a record setting 2013 campaign that saw the team reach 31 victories and the Conference USA semifinals.
In addition to the coaching changes, North Texas fans can expect to see more changes on the field in 2014. The team loses six players to graduation while bringing in three freshmen and two key transfers. However, Kee looks to duplicate the same success from last season.
"This year's squad will indeed have a new look," she said. "Though some faces are new and some players will be focused in different positions, our program's core values will be the same. We will train at a high pace with a meticulous focus to detail. We will continue to be students of the game, and will let our passion shine through in our play. But most of all, we will represent North Texas and our Mean Green community with great pride."
The Mean Green will play four of their five fall season dates in Denton, with three contests taking place inside the friendly confines of Lovelace Stadium. Doubleheaders will be played against TWU, Weatherford and McClennan Community College.
North Texas will open the 2014 fall schedule with a doubleheader against crosstown rival TWU at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 9, at Pioneer Field in Denton.
