Softball's Poole Awarded Postgraduate Scholarship
Poole Is First North Texas Athlete To Be Honored With Award
June 17, 2014
Irving, Texas - North Texas softball graduate Lauren Poole was named a 2014 Jim Castañeda Postgraduate Scholarship recipient on Tuesday, June 17, in an announcement by Conference USA.
"Lauren is a very deserving recipient of the Castaneda Postgraduate Scholarship as she was a leader in the classroom, on the field and in the community," Director of Athletics Rick Villarreal said. "Her perseverance showed through her senior year as she became not only a catalyst for the best season in softball history at North Texas, but graduated Magna Cum Laude. I congratulate Lauren and thank everyone responsible for the assistance provided to help complete her master's degree. Dr. Castaneda would be proud of this outstanding young lady."
Poole is the first student-athlete to receive the award from North Texas after boasting a 3.754 cumulative GPA and graduating with a bachelor's of science in kinesiology in May.
"Hard work pays off," Poole said. "This is really special because after sports, you don't really have a solid source of income to finance something like a master's degree. This goes a long way toward helping me toward my future goals."
Poole is currently pursuing her master's degree in exercise sports and nutrition at Texas Woman's University.
C-USA has presented the $4,000 scholarship to graduates selected by the C-USA faculty athletics representatives with approval by the board of directors each year since June of 2009.
The award is named after Dr. Castañeda, who was an educator, coach and faculty athletics representative at Rice University for 46 years before his passing in November of 2008.
