IRVING, Texas -- For the second consecutive school year, Conference USA has awarded a Mean Green softball student athlete with the Jim Castañeda Postgraduate Scholarship. On Friday, 2015-graduate Madison Thompson became just the second North Texas athlete to receive the honor in the school's second year of conference membership.

Thompson, the lone softball representative on the list of 14 scholarship recipients across various sports, graduated in May after completing her undergraduate degree in psychology with a biology minor and boasting a stellar 3.888 GPA.

The former Mean Green pitcher, known best on the field for her complete game shutout of No. 7 Baylor in 2015, now plans to continue her education at Texas Woman's University-Dallas in pursuit of a master's degree in occupational therapy.

Each year since June 2009, the award of $4,000 has been presented to graduates selected by the Conference USA faculty athletics representatives with approval by the board of directors.

The scholarship is named after Dr. Castañeda, who was an educator, coach and faculty athletics representative at Rice University for 46 years before his passing in November of 2008.
