Kelli Schkade Earns CoSIDA Academic All-America Honors

May 25, 2017

GREENWOOD, Indiana - North Texas senior shortstop Kelli Schkade was selected to the 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-America NCAA Division I Third Team on Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

She becomes the ninth academic All-American in North Texas history and the first Mean Green softball player to garner the honor. Track and field's Heath Smith was the last All-American in 2007.

"As a coach, program and university, you always want to have student-athletes who understand the importance of chasing their career dreams," head coach Tracey Kee said. "The effort, focus and commitment they display on the field should be demonstrated in the classroom as well. Kelli is the epitome of what the word student-athlete means, and we couldn't be more proud of all she has accomplished."

Schkade, who graduated in May with her bachelor of science degree, maintained a grade-point average of 3.88 in her three years in Denton. The Albany, Texas, native has been named to the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll list and awarded an Academic Medal three times.

"This award means a lot to me as it not only recognizes my dedication on the field but also takes into account my work in the classroom," Schkade said. "I have tried to give the same effort in the classroom as in softball, which is not always easy, and I am very honored to be among so many other hard working student-athletes."

The senior strung together another solid campaign in 2017 to round out her time in a Mean Green uniform. She led North Texas in nearly every offensive category en route to her second-straight Conference USA First Team selection.

She was the team's leader in average (.346), hits (64), runs scored (41), stolen bases (22), triples (five), home runs (nine) and multi-hit games (22). Her 22 stolen bases mark a single-season best for a North Texas player and upped her career total to 50, the most in program history.

Schkade was also selected to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association's Division I All-South Region Third Team on May 18, becoming only the third selection in the history of the softball program.
