BOCA RATON, Fla. - On the heels of its record-setting series victory over No. 18 Tulsa, the Mean Green softball team (30-21, 14-9 C-USA) heads into its first Conference USA Softball Championship with momentum and a chance to write some more program history.
North Texas enters the single-elimination tournament as the No. 5 seed. In its first game, the Mean Green will face Florida Atlantic (33-21, 15-9 C-USA), the host of the tournament and No. 4 seed.
Leading the charge for the Mean Green in the circle will be ace Ashley Kirk, whose last victory came on May 3 in the first win over Tulsa. She boasts a 3.39ERA and 21 wins on the season, a program record.
Senior Brooke Foster, who was last seen walking off on a grand slam in the series-clinching win over Tulsa, will anchor a potent Mean Green offense. She enters the tournament batting .337 with 15 home runs, four of which have been lead-off bombs. She's posting a .657 slugging percentage and is tied with junior Dani Hoff for the team high in hits with 59.
Head coach Tracey Kee led the Mean Green to its highest win total in North Texas history in her first year at the helm. She will now steer the ship in Boca for the C-USA Championship, where she has won two of the last four tournaments.
North Texas' first round game with Florida Atlantic is scheduled to begin on Thursday, May 8, at at 5:30 p.m. CST.
